I found a quote I really liked after reading one of the articles. Mark Bauerlein said that, "the intellectual future of the United States looks dim." I wrote down this quote and discussed it with my group. I both agreed and diagreed with this. I agreed because as the years go on technology gets better and better and I believe that is making us lazy. I had to print the one article off the computer because I knew if I tried to read it on the computer screen I would want to easily wonder onto facebook or stumble upon. It's so easy to get side tracked from school work now-a-days when there is much cooler things to do through technology. I then disagreed with this quote because I also believe that technology has helped teachers teach different material for those students who are visual learners.
When we watched that video in class I agreed with some of the things they talked about, like yes we do love our social networking. We discussed this in our group, he can't generalize it all, though. There are some people that don't have time to catch up with their friends through their phone or through facebook everyday. I personally don't have a whole lot of time because I play a school sport. I have class and practice everyday and when I have a home or an away game I have no time for anything. When I get back from school and practice all I want to do is take a nap. After my nap I need the rest of the night to catch up on school work and eat. That's what made me mad about that video. I'm not always trying to socialize with my friends every second I get. I still get on facebook when I can but I don't let it effect what I do during the day because I'm too busy for the most part.
I don't consider us the dumbest generation. Every generation is so different to be able to say we're the dumbest. As the years go on, we get so much smarter with technology and that's something other generations can't say their the smartest in. I do believe that we are starting to forget what it is like to be acedemically smart, though. I'm not saying this goes for everyone, I don't want to generalize but I believe it is starting to take a big notice.
I agree that every generation is different just like the level of social media usage is different for everyone. I think that technology yes has been a good thing but I think it has made us dumb in some of the basics and that’s why the stereo typing has happen. Isn’t that common in our world thou is to stereo type. We have done it for centuries! Why would we change that now?
ReplyDeletewe are smart yet dumb. I liked when you said that we are forgetting what it is like to be academically smart because that is so true. Technology has opened so many doors but in the end it is closing others that shouldnt be closed
ReplyDeleteI agree that we are not the dumbest generation. There are plenty of generations to follow us and they seem to get dumber and dumber to the older generations. I believe that technology has made us lazy but not dumb.
ReplyDeleteThat is a great quote Rachel! I know what you mean by not having time for social networking. I am not quite as busy as you are but I still find that school work takes up so much time that I can't afford to sit around and chat online all the time.
ReplyDeleteLike I said in class, I think your generation has a great deal to contribute to society as a whole. You're innovative, creative, and tech-savvy.
ReplyDeleteBut...I also see some merit in Bauerlein's assertions. Much of Gen Y is consumed by social media and tends toward narcissism. When a student asks, for example, "What does this have to do with me?" or texts in class....they only prove Bauerlein right...right?
I dont think the future looks dim, but i do believe we are moving in the wrong direction. People and our generation specifically are slowly fading away from essentials, i.e: reading in spare time, and knowing our cultures history. For example when my friends find out that i read books in my spare time i get looked at as if i had 3 heads. My friends ask how i can do it, and i tell them that not only is reading fun, but it helps both brain function and vocabulary. Because of this i also was a bit upset to hear what Bauerlin said because he truly does generalize, and there are young adults in our generation that are not controlled by technology, but some are.
